Kiss the lady and the predator

Natalya Yarygina, speaking about another completed tournament in memory of her husband Ivan Sergeevich, noted that she, like many Krasnoyarsk residents, remembered him, first of all, with the golden double of Yuri Belonovsky.

The widow of the two-time Olympic champion admitted that she missed the bright victories of the Siberians-Krasnoyarsk and was especially glad that Belonovsky won in the same weight category in which her husband was fighting. And she praised Yuri for not stopping and continuing his victorious path – he won the title in the absolute weight category, which was played for the first time at the last XXI Yarygin tournament.

At the same time, the first lady of the Grand Prix drew a parallel with the fact that Ivan Yarygin also became the holder of the title of USSR champion in the open in Krasnoyarsk. She seemed to make it clear that she was waiting for a worthy continuation of the winning streak from the 21-year-old athlete.

Natalya Yarygina is well aware of the potential of the Siberian, because, as Belonovsky’s first mentor Viktor Luchiskens, coach of the SDYUSSHOR Krassport noted, for the third time she congratulated Yuri on his victory and presented him with a gold medal on the pedestal – along with a protocol kiss. This happened for the first time at the European Youth Championship in Macedonia, and then at the International Wrestling Festival in Moscow. Then came victories at the European Youth Championship, at the International Tournament for the prizes of the three-time Olympic champion Alexander Medved in Minsk, and other major tournaments.

When asked whether the feelings after those victories were comparable to the feelings after the triumph at the Yarygin tournament, Belonovsky replied that they were similar. However, the victory in the hometown – in front of the Krasnoyarsk people, friends and acquaintances – the degree of sensations turned out to be higher. “In addition, the name of the great wrestler Ivan Yarygin, the memory of him – all this in itself obliges a lot and means a lot for every participant in the tournament,” added Belonovsky. – By the way, I remember very well the World Championship, which took place in our city in 1997 thanks to Ivan Yarygin. We watched it then together with my father, master of sports in wrestling, also Yuri, and with my older brother Vladimir. The impressions remained for life. ”

Yuri recalls his recent victories at the Grand Prix as a job well done – without pathos, as they say now. He notes that the fight for reaching the final in the weight category up to 96 kg with Georgy Ketoev, as well as the final with Shamil Akhmedov, became a turning point. In both fights, Belonovsky was on the verge of defeat, but he said that he really didn’t want to be defeated in front of the Ukrasnoyarsk people, so when there was nowhere to retreat, he went ahead and got the necessary points. The support of the fans helped him a lot in this.

And how did his first coach see all this?

– Yes, the most difficult fight was with Ketoev, the ex-world champion, who was eager to fight in order to rehabilitate himself for a fiasco in Beijing, agrees Victor Luchiskens. – I agree that Belonovsky’s fights were not particularly spectacular, as they were some time ago, but the main thing is that the result has been achieved. Achieved in male – viscous and tough – wrestling. Yura showed real character. The first period in the fight with Ketoev, he lost one point. In the second, I was losing 0: 2, but I managed to get past Georgy at his feet, move him to the ground, and then rolled. And already 3: 2 in our favor. In the third period, no one risked – both were afraid to go forward, to open up. As a result, a lot was drawn, which gave the advantage of the capture to Ketoev. And you know, Yura proved to be a good tactician. At first, Ketoev hurried to start moving, and the referee made a remark to him. Then Yura did not give Ketoev a leg and also earned a reprimand. But Yura made his opponent nervous… Georgy seemed to have already made a capture and the referee blew the whistle to the beginning of the fight, and after the whistle, Ketoev suddenly decided to change it, intercept, but too late – Yura got out of the capture, fired the whistle, as we say, and immediately earned the victory point. In the final, Belonovsky was faced with a cunning and elastic opponent, though not as powerful and experienced as Ketoev. Yura lost a point to Shamil in the opening, but he pressed on his opponent so hard that Akhmedov, shortly before the end of the period, simply rushed over the carpet from Belonovsky’s attack. Yura rushed after him like a predator. He caught up, knocked Shamiml down to the ground and managed to earn a point that brought him victory in the period. The second period is 0: 0, and Akhmedov uses a lucky draw, putting Yuri “on three points”. Shortly before the end of the decisive period, Belonovsky implements the coaching instructions and the shouts of the fans not to bring the matter to a clinch: he goes to his feet, knocks Akhmedov down to the ground and again rolls over. The scoreboard says that there is only one second left for the fight, and Shamil has no choice but to extend his hand to Belonovsky and congratulate him on his victory.

The fight with Shemarov for gold in the open for Belonovsky was also not easy and also developed in three periods. The only thing that distinguished him from the previous ones was that, as Yuri himself admitted, psychologically he was no longer so squeezed, because he did the job and could “walk boldly after that”. Shemarov approached the fight, injuring his knee. However, the advantage in height, weight and power remained with him, and after the second period the set score was 1: 1. Belonovsky began to guess about the injury of his opponent only during the fight, noticing that the Belarusian limped slightly, and there was a bandage on his leg.

There is a concept in sports everyday life, which means fair or fair play. There is even a prize of the same name, awarded for the manifestation of nobility, albeit to the detriment of one’s own sports achievements…. Moreover, football fans know that many football players often use an unwritten rule to knock the ball over the sideline if an opposing player is injured in order to disrupt a dangerous attack on their own goal. In wrestling, everything is much more definite: if you entered the wrestling circle, did not withdraw due to injury, then do not expect mercy – only one will leave the carpet as a winner.

“I didn’t do condescension to Shemarov,” Belonovsky admitted, “but I didn’t try to pass the Belarusian in the legs on purpose in order to aggravate the injury. I just fought him as an equal. I am sure that Shemarov would have done the same if I had been injured.

And here is how Victor Luchiskens commented on my doubts about the wrestling interpretation of the concept of “fair play”:

– I always say to the boys that if an opponent came out on the carpet even in a cast, he went out to fight for victory, so fight as usual. In the same way, if you yourself have entered the circle with an injury or are not completely healthy, then do not indulge yourself and do not expect condescension from your opponent: it is doubly shameful to lose to a one-armed or one-legged fighter. If a clinch had been appointed, I am sure that Yura would have taken Shemarov’s healthy leg into the grip so that the opponent’s body weight would fall on the leg with a knee injury and it would be more difficult for the opponent to stand on it. This is sport and its laws.

Does this mean that the wrestling circle forever drives each athlete to its own corner, from where all the others are only rivals, only “blue” or “red”. Yuri Belonovsky does not think so:

– I respect both Georgy Ketoev and Khadzhimurad Gatsalov, who did not come to Krasnoyarsk this year. I also respect Shamil Akhmedov. We are all in the national team and at tournaments we communicate normally. No sidelong glances, everyone helps each other. And by fighting with all your might – even in training sparring, as we often do with my heavyweight friend Kirill Gotovtsev – you make yourself and your partner stronger… Ultimately, we are all working to ensure that Russian wrestlers win at international tournaments and championships. I was always taught to fight with all his might by Victor Luchiskens, whom he came to at the age of seven. He taught me a lot, and I will always remember him. This is what my current teachers at the Wrestling Academy continue to teach me, where Viktor Zakharovich transferred me as the winner of the youth championship of Russia – Dmitry Georgievich Mindiashvili, Vladimir Dmitrievich Lebedev, Viktor Petrovich Alekseev, coaches from the Russian national team. And with Viktor Zakharovich, we are still in touch, and he continues to help me.

I must say, Yuri himself began to repay debts to his coach. More precisely, to those children who are now studying with Luchiskens: Belonovsky often comes to them at the Sputnik sports complex. And not with empty hands, but with a big cake – over tea the conversation flows smoother and more relaxed.

Yuri Belonovsky also has a whole street of friends. More correctly – “Sports street”. This is the name of the football team for which his friends play. Many of them came here from the carpet, like Yuri himself, who plays the role of defender of the fatherland in the team. He plays tenaciously, quickly, unyieldingly, but not rude. In winter, Yura goes snowboarding with friends, if there is time and the weather is not as frosty as it is now. He admits that he is not very reckless, although he is ready to show some tricks on occasion. And in general, he tries to avoid dangerous situations, conflicts in life, which can interfere with a sports career, because he feels responsibility for working together with mentors, responsibility for the city and the region that he represents at competitions.

Belonovsky also likes to visit his grandmother in a village near Aban. Three hundred miles from Krasnoyarsk – beauty, tranquility, bustle of cities and does not smell. You can also chop resinous firewood, but it’s better to give up fishing… Even if you don’t catch a fish, you will see enough of a jumping float – to the point of dizziness …

But what about the girls ?! No, Yuri won’t say a word to anyone about them. Unless he allows himself to admire Japanese women or Korean women. They, they say, make such a rustle, they do this on carpets … Such courage, speed, agility and indolence are shown on them – to the envy of the fighters-men.

But in general, Belonovsky does not particularly honor women’s wrestling: he believes that girls should be first of all feminine and charming, and only then – again feminine and charming …
Yuri speaks with certainty about his future plans only in relation to the completion of his studies at the Institute of Combat Sports of the Krasnoyarsk Pedagogical University. About Olympic ambitions is also a word that is not a sparrow, you cannot squeeze out of it. You will only hear: “I will try and I am not going to stop there.”

One hope is that Luchiskens will tell you something. But Viktor Zakharovich is ready to share only his personal observations:

– Many wrestling fans pay attention to the muscles, the power of athletes, – said Viktor Zakharovich, – but I, looking at the pedestal in the open, on which two giants – Shemarov and the Turks Chakyroglu stood on either side of Yuri, suddenly caught myself thinking that, peering into Yurin’s face, I understand: I already see the face of a man. The face of the winner. The calm, confident face of a person who has done his job with dignity and does not experience any transcendental emotions after that. And what is significant, almost all spectators stayed in the stands and waited for the award in the absolute category. At the same time, referees, coaches from Dagestan, Ossetia came up to me, congratulated on the success of the student. Strength is respected and appreciated by everyone.

We would like that the aspiration for victory that visited Yuri in January did not leave him in the future. And she helped Belonovsky Jr. to form a quality in himself, called in the language of football, when it comes to hammering forwards, killer instinct… And then we will always see Belonovsky the predator on the carpet, forcing opponents to make mistakes and run away from him. Such a fighter as Luchiskens saw him in a fight with Akhmedov, and not a big, strong, but good-natured and happy Winnie the Pooh.

We, thank God, have already seen enough of talented wrestlers who, after a number of bright victories, joined the ranks of the top ten wrestlers – nothing more.
